The project must consist of five pages, each page must be complete at the end of the semester. Each page much have appropriate content and be code-ready for the internet.
You will have various due dates for the different aspects of the site.
Part 1 – Brief (due August 1)
Write a half page creative brief on the website. What is the overall purpose of the website and are the site’s objectives. Who is the audience? Who is the competition? Is their anything unique about this website that sets it apart from the competition? What are the mandatory items to make this a functional site? How will this site be successful.
Part 2 – Site Outline (due August ![]()
Either a sketch or written outline of all the pages the website will contain. Make sure to include all parents / daughter pages. All links must be laid out.
Part 3 – Preliminary Design (due August 15)
This may be done in photoshop and is a sketch of the overall design of the website. It does not have to be in a functional state, the overall look of the site should be decided.
Part 4 – Functional Home Page (due August 22)
The main layout must be finished, This page must be coded.
Part 5 – Completed and tested website (due August 29)
The entire website must be finished. The site should be tested in multiple browsers (Safari, Firefox, Etc.)
Create a 30 second tv spot ad for an animated television show about yourself.
Must include:
A fully animated person. This should be your animated recreation. It can be simple animation (think South Park) but should resemble you in some way. You may draw the character in Flash or use elements from Illustrator.
Title of the show. This can be anything you want.
Network Logo. Pick the network you want your show to air on. It can be real or made up, but real logos are available free on the internet.
Time / Day. Tell us when to watch the show. Also tell us the day of the week it will regularly air, and make sure to tell us when it premieres.
Content. Give us some insight into what the show is about. If it’s a cooking show you should show us a kitchen. If the show is about your family, show us your kids. Have fun with this but make sure it is relevant.
The animation does not have to contain sound.
Due – August 22 at the beginning of class.
Here is the review questions for the Mid-Term that will be given on August 8.
Before you continue developing your personal website I want you to research other PERSONAL designers / illustrators / photographers portfolio websites.
You are to find 10 websites you consider to be fantastic / spectacular / amazing / whathaveyou. Copy the link to the website in a word document and for each site write 2 – 3 sentences on what makes it so special to you. Be thorough in your description and explain exactly what you think is so great.
Please stay away from Flash based websites as we want to focus on good uses of HTML in this class. Also please avoid commercial websites, I’d like you to pick out personal sites for this assignment.
I want everyone to get a good idea of the designs currently in use before we proceed with out personal site.
You will present your websites and thoughts at the end of class on July 25.
Non-Profit Web Page
You are to create a functional design layout for a non-profit organization of your choosing.
I recommend that you do your layout in Photoshop and convert to HTML in Dreamweaver.
Your site must contain at least 4 rollover buttons and at least two additional images. You must also set a background color or background image.
Reminder – web images are to be 72 DPI and I suggest your layout be no more than 1000 pixels wide.
Due at the beginning of the class on July 25.
Please note that we are adjusting the schedule. We will revisit the non-profit webpage at a later date.
First you will want to brainstorm and create a site map for your website. You need to figure out what the pages are that you will include in your website. You are required to have a minimum of 5 pages. Suggested example pages – Home, About, Portfolio, Resume, Contact. In the site map process you should figure out any sub-pages that you will need – You may wish to break down your portfolio into graphic design, illustration, and photography (or something similar).
After you have completed your brainstorming session you will need to start sketching out the general framework of your website. The minimum requirements are a title block and the five “buttons” to the various pages. You will then build your website in Photoshop, though you can use Illustrator or other programs to aid in the process, you will need to have the site set up in Photoshop.
When you have a ready layout in PS, you will create slices using the slice tool and then save for web (HTML + Images) and then import to DW. You will need to save your PSD file in order to create rollover images.
Set up the web page in Dreamweaver. You may have the links point to dummy pages (you will continue this throughout the semester).
Basic framework and HTML page due July 18. Please create a folder with your name under the project 2 folder on the server.
You will be creating a five page website composed of Flash elements. You will also use your knowledge of HTML and Dreamweaver along with Photoshop to create the website.
This website can be for anything, but I suggest a portfolio website for yourself.
You must have five pages. This could be – (1) Home Page, (2) Artist/Designer Statement, (3) Portfolio of Work, (4) Contact Page, (5) Links. There isn’t a requirement of pages, you could have one portfolio page with graphic design and one with photography. There just needs to be a minimum of 5 pages or subheadings.
At the very minimum you should have an animated title banner (at the top) and animated buttons. There are many video tutorials on the internet that show how to set up animated buttons in Flash – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15uTJjS_eBE
The minimum size requirement is 700 px x 500 px, but remember that most monitors are bigger than that these days. I would not exceed 1200 px x 800 px.
Due July 25 at the end of class.
Here is the PDF of the CSS cheat sheet I handed out in class if you have misplaced it. This and many more good resources are available at www.addedbytes.com.
